Spasticity
Added to TX CUP: 2019
Diagnosis Context
Spasticity is a velocity-dependent increase in muscle tone arising from upper motor neuron dysfunction. It is a symptom of an underlying neurological condition, not a stand-alone disease, and is documented by a neurologist or physiatrist alongside the underlying diagnosis.
CUP Eligibility
Spasticity is on the Texas Compassionate Use Program’s current qualifying conditions list.
Evidence Base for Low-THC Therapy
The cannabinoid literature in spasticity is most developed in MS-related spasticity, with additional work in spinal cord injury. Texas’s CUP authorizes only low-THC products under a statutory cap. The certifying physician will discuss what the evidence supports for your underlying condition.
