Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
Added to TX CUP: 2019
Diagnosis Context
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a progressive motor neuron disease affecting upper and lower motor neurons. Diagnosis is established by a neurologist using current diagnostic criteria, supported by EMG and clinical course.
CUP Eligibility
ALS is on the Texas Compassionate Use Program’s current list of qualifying diagnoses.
Evidence Base for Low-THC Therapy
In ALS care, cannabinoid discussion most often addresses spasticity, sialorrhea, sleep, and pain. Texas’s CUP authorizes only low-THC products under a statutory cap. The certifying physician will discuss what the literature does and does not support, in the context of your current care plan.
What a CURT Physician Will Look For
- ALS diagnosis confirmation from the treating neurologist
- Current treatment plan including any disease-modifying therapy
- Symptom focus (spasticity, sialorrhea, sleep, pain)
- Functional status documentation
- Treating neurologist contact information for care coordination
Care Coordination
ALS care is multidisciplinary. A CUP certification is one element of symptom management and should be coordinated with the treating neurology team and any palliative-care partners.
